Coastal Garden Lee
This amazing but challenging site is directly on the North Devon Coast with spectacular views over the sea.
The brief was to redesign the whole garden whose existing hard landscaping was falling apart and unsafe to create a natural garden with two patio areas using sustainable materials and planting to encourage wildlife with seasonal interest and of course able to withstand and flourish in the salt-laden windy conditions. Also, we were asked to include a new electric gate, fencing, driveway, an outside shower, fruit trees and woodland walks.
The resulting design was intended to create new sheltered areas and a journey through the garden.
We were also asked to use sustainable materials wherever possible.
We created the design, layout drawings, lighting plans, and planting plans.
We are sourcing and planting mature trees, shrubs, fruit trees, perennials, and bulbs. We are also doing all of the landscaping elements such as preparing and seeding new lawns and wildflower meadows.
We are working alongside Chris Kirkby from Headlands Construction who is building the hard landscaping elements
On starting to clear the old hard landscaping we discovered a lot of concrete and rebar in the ground which had to be removed.
We saved as many plants as possible putting them safely to one side.
The construction for the areas of hard-landscaping is well underway and the structural trees and shrubs are starting to go in the ground. Next will be shaping, preparing and seeding of the lawns and wildflower meadows whilst the build continues alongside.
The walling stone and paving and steps are all to be built using Blue Lias, a stone from a quarry in Somerset.

Coastal Garden
Porlock Weir
We recently started work on this lovely project right on the beach at Porlock Weir.
This garden is made up of a series of three walled rooms which were completely neglected and derelict.
The brief was to create seating areas and retaining walls with planting in the two rooms closest to the house. The third room which is right on the beach was to echo a seaside theme with decking and a gravel garden with interconnecting boardwalks floating over planting including grasses and striking structural plants. We were also commissioned to create a trellis around the deck and a gate leading to the beach.
The front garden also needed attention. The brief was to create a seating area with natural stone paving and planting pockets to soften it. A bin area also needed to be considered. We have been commissioned to make a bench and a unique steel and chestnut gate for this area.
A total planting plan is also needed for this garden which had been completely stripped.
This planting scheme is to include structural plants for year-round interest, grasses, perennials, climbing roses and bulbs. All of the plants chosen will need to be able to cope with the salt-laden air, however the walled nature of the garden does create opportunities for more delicate species in the micro climates created.
